My First Musical

Even before I moved, people were recommending I make New York theatergoing a habit. But I find most plays pretty boring (this coming from someone who volutarily became the house manager at a locally celebrated Absurdist theater, and yes I realize this may have been part of the problem).

Thing is, even with the "New York price," tickets to popular shows are mighty expensive. So when I was offered a free ticket to Tony Award-winning "Avenue Q," I said yes.

I can see why the show is so popular. It's got puppets. (One half of the couple standing behind me asked, "We're seeing a musical about Sesame Street?!") It's got humor, truth, an actress who looked like Keiko O'Brien from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and an actress playing Gary Coleman of "Diff'rent Stokes," and naked puppet sex.

But mostly, it was a fun bit of froth that had lots of people humming tunes from the show, including "It Sucks to Be Me."

(The cast members in the vid aren't the same as the people onstage tonight.)

A nice bit of levity for what would otherwise have been a work-focused weekend.

(Just for kicks: watch "It Sucks to Be Me" in Swedish.)
