If you've raced, then you know that you've got to register (or run as a bandit), and in a limited capacity event like this one, getting in early is always wise. Last year, I dwaddled a bit too long and all the slots for the Nike Women's Marathon more than 15,000 of them sold out before I could get my name on the roster.
This year, I made sure to spring off the starting line and be among the first to sign up. Of course, once I did, I got that sinking feeling. I'd registered for the half-marathon a distance more than twice as far as I've ever run in my life in a competitive-ish setting.
But I've made the commitment, so I'm going to stick it out. Besides, when I told a colleague what I'd done and then quizzed him Dumb or daring? without hesitation he chose the latter.
