Uniqlo's viral ad widget Uniqlock, has been around since September, I believe, but today was the first time I saw it.

As with a lot of Japanese advertising, there's no real point. It just draws you in. Makes me wonder if the "advertising rule of 3" applies outside the U.S.

Anyhow, enjoy. Turn on the music and dance (and cat's cradle) along. Click on the Uniqlock to explore other features, including the World.Uniqlock. And next time you're in New York, check out the rotating mannequin army at the SoHo flagship store.

Brad Mehldau - It Might As Well Be Spring

It was time for a Movable Type upgrade, but it didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped. Still, the backend is up and running, and with a little more time, I'll be recoding the templates (MT4.1 has changes, which I've yet to pick through) and finally tackling the story/Where to Eat map.

Meanwhile, here's what's in store:
The West Coast run (from breakfast after midnight at Fred 62 in L.A., to lunch at Le Charme in San Francisco, to dinner at Carmelita in Seattle)

San Francisco, part deux (Cafe Claude, Cafe de la Presse, MarketBar and Lefty O'Doul's)

Table for One at El Centro

Hello, Goodbye (Rickshaw Dumpling Bar and Village)

East-West Exploring

Accommodation (Wild Ginger and Artisanal)

Monday Night Reading List - The Revival Edition

| | Comments (0)
Though I was unable to automatically import about six months of entries (those will be painstakingly recreated here over time), some of the older stories and features have bubbled up.

Among them, the clever ode, "The Copy Editor's Lament" and a story spun off of a movie night.

But there was one regular segment I realized I'd missed: the Monday Night Reading List. And it's not because I haven't been reading. In the struggle to get through the day, I haven't put in the time to record the list here.

So without further ado, we're bringing it back, though tonight it's in an abbreviated version.

In the reading stack:

V-Day, D-Day

I've got 24 hours (well, maybe a little less) to while away and I'm not sure what I'll do with the time. Honestly, I should be doing laundry or catching up on sleep. But given free time, I walk around.

Turns out that's the preferred thing to do among Manhattan Users Guide readers as well. (Answer the poll to see the results.)

This weekend, I realized despite being here for more than a year, I still don't know the city that well. So I took a train to Bleeker Street and began to walk. Eventually I found myself at the Washington Square Diner. You'd think a diner would be cheap, but not this place. I scuttled off after a $12 breakfast in the afternoon.

I've gotten used to the idea that cheap food in a sit-down restaurant is a difficult thing to find.

Play "Walk Like an Egyptian"
by The Bangles

It's been a long time since I made anything from scratch.

Some say it's because I no longer have a dishwasher.

Others say it's because New York wears you out with its multitude of restaurants and exhausting pace, making it all too easy to buy something.

But when I spied Mark Bittman's Ultimate Minimalist Macaroon recipe, something in me said I had to make them.

Mine weren't quite as pretty as Bittman's, but they were good enough for me.

It's going viral. Guess I'm helping things along. See if you can find me:
